July 13, 2021: Sustainable Transportation
DID YOU KNOW..... Driving our vehicles is one of the major activities that causes the most climate pollution. The other is heating our homes. The average Ontarian, by driving their vehicles, personally causes about 2.2 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually. (March 2019 report from the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario) Even though as individuals we are only partly responsible for greenhouse gas emissions, it is extremely important that we reduce the use of fossil fuels whenever we can. As Canadians, we are very dependent on our cars and in fact, our lives are often organized around them.
Here are some ways we can reduce our car and / or gasoline use.
MAKE SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORTATION CHOICES
Use public transportation when possible.
Carpool.
Walk or ride a bike.
Plan your outings to include all errands in one trip.
Keep tires properly inflated, clean air filters, have your vehicles properly tuned and AVOID IDLING. A simple and effective way to reduce GHG emissions that are contributing to climate change. 60 seconds is the recommended interval except in traffic. Countries around the world are concerned about the impact of transportation and are recommending 10-60 seconds in the environmental initiatives.
Only have a second vehicle when absolutely necessary.
When purchasing new, consider cars with better gas mileage such as hybrids or fully electric.
Get the most energy efficient vehicle that you can afford.
BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE.
