The United Church of Canada
– Global Emergency Response
When emergencies strike, people need help right away. First with the basics―shelter, food, clothing―and then with rebuilding. United Church partners and ecumenical relationships in over 120 countries are on the ground and able to assess what’s needed. Partners respond to those in need, and the United Church can help support their efforts. Time and time again, the people of the United Church give generously to support those affected by emergencies.

Thank you for your generosity to help the many that are without shelter as a result of the earthquake last week and its subsequent aftershocks.
Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday
Since we aren’t having a Shrove Tuesday gathering at Calvary this year, I asked both White Oaks United and Wesley-Knox if we could join them for pancakes, on Tuesday Feb. 21 and of course they said yes. Here are the details for the Shrove Tuesday suppers at our neighbouring United Churches:
White Oaks UC: Feb. 21 between 5:30 and 7:30pm. Everyone welcome to join in a delicious meal of pancakes, syrup and sausages. Our scouting troop is preparing this meal. Cost is $6.00 for children up to 10. Cost is $8.00 for children over 10 and adults.
Wesley-Knox UC: Feb. 21 from 5-7pm. Everyone is welcome to a wonderful meal of pancakes, ham, baked beans and do it yourself sundaes. Cost is $10 for Adults, Children 12 and under $5.
Ash Wednesday combined service hosted by White Oaks UC at 7pm. Ash Wednesday is a solemn reminder of human mortality and the need for reconciliation with God and marks the beginning of the Lenten season. It is commonly observed with ashes, prayers and meditation.
LENT
If you are interested in obtaining a copy of "Good Courage" for your Lenten devotionals, please contact Rev. Kerry at kerry.stover@calvaryunitedchurch.com or contact the Church Office since Rev. Kerry must submit the order right away to obtain the copies for Lent. The total cost is $20. Financial support is being provided to offset the cost of the book so everyone can follow the devotions.
Pink Shirt Day, February 22
Anti-Bullying Day is an annual event, held in Canada and other parts of the world, where people wear a pink-coloured shirt to stand against bullying. The initiative was started in Canada, where it is held on the last Wednesday of February each year.
The Day of Pink 2022 online talk hosted by London Public Library and City of London is available on YouTube and what Ruthanne based her presentation on for the Affirming Minute on Sunday, February 12.

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER
World Day of Prayer is Friday, March 3rd. Further information will be coming about a Zoom presentation.
NOTICE FROM CHILDREN'S AID SOCIETY
The Children's Aid of London-Middlesex is experiencing an influx of children of all ages in foster care. They are especially in need of retired or older adults, or stay-at-home parents who have time and flexibility to care for our teens or babies and toddlers who often require a stay-at-home caregiver. They also have relief fostering options for folks only available on weekends. Many children are being placed in other cities or group homes when CAS cannot find placements locally, disconnecting them from families and communities. Children in care have diverse racial, sexuality, and gender identities so we ask anyone interested to be willing to support any child for who they are.

“The Real McCoy”
Ever wonder where that old expression, “The Real McCoy,” came from?
This popular expression, “The Real McCoy” typically meaning the real thing, has been attributed to Elijah McCoy's oil-drip cup invention. One theory is that railroad engineers looking to avoid inferior copies would request it by name, and inquire if a locomotive was fitted with "the real McCoy system". This theory is mentioned in Elijah McCoy's biography at the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
The expression "The real McCoy" was first published in Yorkville (now part of Toronto), Ontario, in 1881. Later, the December 1966 issue of Ebony, in an advertisement for Old Taylor bourbon whiskey made mention of Elijah McCoy: "But the most famous legacy McCoy left his country was his name."
Elijah McCoy was born in 1844 in Colchester, Ontario, to George and Mildred Goins McCoy. At the time, they were fugitive slaves who had escaped from Kentucky to Ontario via helpers through the Underground Railroad. George and Mildred arrived in Colchester Township, Essex County, in what was then called Upper Canada in 1837 via Detroit. Elijah McCoy had eleven siblings.
Upper Canadian schools were segregated under the Common Schools Act as amended in 1850, and Elijah McCoy was educated in black schools of Colchester Township. At the age of 15, in 1859, Elijah McCoy was sent to Scotland. While there he was apprenticed and, after studying at the University of Edinburgh, certified as a mechanical engineer. Upon completion of his schooling Elijah returned to Michigan where his parents had moved to from Essex County to set up farming in the Ypsilanti area.
When Elijah McCoy arrived in Michigan, he could find work only as a fireman and oiler at the Michigan Central Railroad. In a home-based machine shop in Ypsilanti, McCoy also did more highly skilled work, such as developing improvements and inventions. He invented an automatic lubricator for oiling the steam engines of locomotives and ships, patenting it in 1872 as "Improvement in Lubricators for Steam-Engines" (U.S. Patent 129,843).

Psalm for the Week
Psalm 71: 17-19 (New Revised Standard Version translation)
O God, from my youth you have taught me,
and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds.
So even to old age and grey hairs,
O God, do not forsake me,
until I proclaim your might
to all the generations to come.
Your power and your righteousness, O God,
reach the high heavens.
Prayer for the Week
O Holy One, you give strength and understanding to all who have hope in you.
We accomplish nothing good without you, without your ways to live our lives.
Help us to see and understand the things we ought to do, and give us grace and power to do them, through Jesus Christ, our Teacher and Saviour. Amen.
