Calvary Compass – February 25, 2025 - Calvary United Church, www.calvaryuc.ca

Dear Friends of Calvary,

There are important dates to remember this week. Your cheques must be in by this Friday (February 28th) if you plan to renew your Broadview Magazine subscription. Also our Annual Congregational Meeting is this Sunday (March 2nd) after our worship service. This is an important meeting since we will be voting on the 2 year Collaboration Plan with Riverside, Wesley-Knox, White Oaks and Calvary.

Also, it is important to get out and vote in the Provincial Election this Thursday (February 27th). Even if you do not have your voter's card, you can still vote if you show them a piece of identification with your address on it.

Rev. Kerry is back from his Study Week on Wednesday.

Worship Services are all live-streamed:

ANNUAL MEETING

The Annual Meeting takes place on Sunday, March 2nd following the Worship Service. It will be held in-person and on Zoom. The voting for the meeting will be done in-person and on Zoom. There will be no proxy voting or voting before the meeting. If you plan to vote on Zoom, please let Kim Knowles know beforehand since she will be tabulating the votes on Zoom.

As mentioned above, we will be voting on the 2-year Collaboration Plan with Riverside, Wesley-Knox, White Oaks and Calvary. When the motions are brought forward, Bill Butt will answer any of your final questions or concerns before the vote. There are also information sheets at the back of the sanctuary to help you better understand the plan. This is an important vote for our congregation.

For those viewing the Annual Meeting on Zoom, there will be a brief period in between the end of the live-stream worship service and the Zoom start. It takes a few minutes to set up for the Annual Meeting and switch to Zoom. Please be patient and use the Zoom ID and Password that is listed below: (using our usual Zoom link)

BLUE COMMUNITY

As a follow up in regards to the Minute for Mission that Bonnie McNichol presented on Sunday: The Church Council and Outreach Committee have agreed to attempt to make Calvary a Blue Community Zone. Blue Community centers on the conservation of water and the use of re-useable water containers as opposed to single use water bottles and disposable glasses. Through the posters that the Sunday School children made that have been placed on the church's entrances and around the church, we are encouraging everyone who uses Calvary to respect this policy. There will be plastic re-useable glasses at the back of the sanctuary for people to use during worship services. We also encourage people to bring their own water containers to use.

BROADVIEW RENEWALS DUE

If you wish to continue your subscription or get a new subscription for the Broadview magazine, please let Kim in the office know by February 28th. The cost is $30 and make cheques payable to Calvary United Church with Broadview written on the memo line.

Formerly known as the Observer, Broadview is a Canadian magazine focused on spirituality and the United Church of Canada news.

Tax Receipts for January and February

On December 31, 2024, the federal government announced that they were extending the donation deadline for 2024 until the end of February 2025. This is due to the significant impact the postal strike had on charities nationwide. This change will allow people to claim their January and February

2025 donations on their 2024 tax return, if they choose to do so. Alternatively, they can claim these donations on their 2025 tax return as per usual. Therefore Kim will be running tax receipts for January and February donations and they will be available for pick up at the back of the church this Sunday. When tax receipts are printed for 2025, they will cover the period March 1 to December 31.

Psalm of the week:

Psalm 99: 1 -3 from the World English Bible Translation

Yahweh reigns! Let the people tremble.

He sits enthroned among the cherubim.

                Let the earth be moved.

            Yahweh is great in Zion.

He is high above all peoples.

Let them praise your great and awesome name.

                He is Holy!

 Prayer for the week:

            Loving and caring God,

In our hearts we carry many burdens.

Forgive us for not putting you first and

foremost. As we humble ourselves, forgive

            our sins, known and

            unknown and teach us

to forgive the faults of others just as you

forgive us. May peace lead our lives. Amen.

Prayer focus: Those preparing for Calvary's Annual Meeting on March 2nd.
