Calvary Compass – February 28, 2023 - Calvary United Church, www.calvaryuc.ca

Dear Friends of Calvary,

Old Man Winter is not finished with us. Hopefully the ice/snow storm will not cause any power outages, closures and traffic issues. Try to be safe when outside as the roads, driveways and sidewalks can be quite slippery.

This week will be busy with Jazz Vespers on Wednesday night, World Day of Prayer video and discussion on Friday afternoon, Seedy Saturday on this Saturday and the Congregational Annual Meeting on Sunday after the worship service. Further information about these events are located in this week's Compass.

The Annual Congregational Meeting will be Sunday, March 5th after the worship service and will take place in the sanctuary. It will be both in-person and on Zoom using Calvary's link. We hope to start the meeting at 11:30 am. A  soup lunch will be provided by Outreach Committee after the meeting in the lower hall.

Black History Month

Ending our series on notable Black people in Canada we focus on a Londoner; Cecily Alexander, from dietician to author

Ms. Alexander, from London, Ontario, published her memoir, Immigration, Race and Survival --From Trinidad to Canada: Living in parallel worlds (2021).

Through Cecily’s journals and her research for this book, she learned new concepts and definitions of race and racialized behaviour, like microaggressions, microinvalidation and critical race theory that give voice to what she has experienced.  At the time, Cecily related that she knew what was happening to me was wrong but "I didn't have the words"

“There are many themes in my memoir. There are significant differences between Trinidad and United States in how black people view race. Trinidad is a country where our politicians, government is run by blacks and people of colour. Slaves were treated as people not property. There is a powerlessness to covert racism, especially when the racism is from a manager who has the power to fire you. One succeeded and the other manager almost did.”

Cecily’s career spans over 35 years as a dietitian. She has worked in all areas of dietetics--clinical nutrition, food service administration, dietetic internship programs and teaching at both the community college and university level. She ran a Healthy Weight Program for 8 years and worked in all clinical specialties, but my clinical preferences have been G.I. surgery and critical care. Cecily’s background includes extensive professional service and volunteering for my professional associations over the years, and she truly enjoyed her roles with the College of Dietitians for 9 years, including three years as their president.
