Calvary Compass – July 11th, 2023 - Calvary United Church, www.calvaryuc.ca

Dear Friends of Calvary,

Hopefully you have been able to find a cool spot to get some relief from the sun and hot weather. According to the weather experts, we have already had a least one of the world's hottest days this July. Where are those Climate Change disbelievers?

Kim Knowles will be on vacation the week of July 17th. Nancy Hind will be checking the telephone messages and collecting the mail.

The next edition of the Calvary Compass will be Tuesday, July 25th.

Worship Services are all live-streamed:

July 16 - https://youtube.com/live/ilelekAwxXY?feature=share

July 23 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-P5cxPkpHfc

Recorded service for July 9th - https://youtube.com/live/N17OkJqWgI0?feature=share

EMILY DODDS

Emily graduated grade 6 and will be attending Ecole Secondaire Monseigneur Bruyere in the Fall. She won an Award of Distinction for which she had to have high grades, school spirit, contribute to school life, as well as contribute to her local community.

PRAYER REQUESTS

We encourage you to submit prayer requests for family, friends and neighbours that you are concerned about! Prayer requests are sent to the members of our prayer circle on a regular basis. On Sundays, prayer requests can be submitted through the prayer request box that is on the credenza in the west end of the sanctuary. Prayer request cards are located next to the wooden box and in the pew backs. You are welcome to write down the name or names of those in need of prayer and put the card in the box or on the offering plate on Sunday morning. We guarantee your privacy. You can also email Rev. Kerry at kerry.stover@calvaryunitedchurch.on.ca with prayer requests.

CALVARY GREEN

Calvary Green and Outreach are pleased to announce that Green Sacred Spaces London will be taking over the Interfaith Tree planting project this Fall. We are excited to be able to carry on the tradition that Julie Ryan and Reforest London started 10 years ago. Many thanks to their dedication.

It seems only to be a natural fit for GSS in so many ways. The 2 dates are tentatively set for October 15th or October 22nd (from 2:30 - 5 pm). An exact date and location will be determined soon. It will be a location with diversity that will bring "tree equity" to the Forest City.

See you on October!    Trees  - Genesis 1: 11 -12

A London Pride Interfaith Service will take place at First-St Andrews on Friday July 21st at 7 PM. We are asking you to invite your family and friends and spread the word.

The service will include readings and prayers from many faith traditions.

PRIDE PARADE

The London Pride Parade is Sunday July 23rd from noon to approximately 3:00 pm. The route has changed due to all of the construction on Dundas Street. It will NOT start at the Western Fair District. The Floats will stage and get ready on Queens Ave from Quebec St. and Adelaide St.  At 9:30 am Queens Ave will be shut down from Quebec and Adelaide St. The disembark of the parade will be on Wellington Street between Central and Dufferin (probably Wolfe Street.).

There will be wagons for those who wish to ride instead of walk. The group will be walking with other United Churches. Each church will have their own banner. If you are interested in joining the group, please contact either the church office or Rev. Kerry at kerry.stover@calvaryunitedchurch.on.ca  You may choose to be part of the people watching the route. Please remember this is your last formal reminder since the next Compass will NOT be until July 25th.

CHAMPION

For those interested in playing some games or cards, playing pickleball or just conversation, the church will be open the following dates from 1:00 - 3:30 pm to get together and socialize:

  • Wednesday, July 19th

  • Wednesday, July 26th

  • Wednesday, August 9th

  • Wednesday, August 23rd

There will be no formal refreshments offered so please bring a water bottle. You can also put on the kettle if you wish some tea.

JAMS AND PRESERVES

It is that time of year again when the fresh strawberries, raspberries, peaches, pears, currents, cucumbers, tomatoes and other fruits and vegetables are available to either pick or purchase to make jams or preserves. If you are planning to make some jams or preserves, please make a little more for Calvary's Bazaar in the Fall.

If you have extra 125 ml; 250 ml; or 500 ml. jars that you will not be using, please drop them off for others to use. A box labelled JARS is located at the parking lot entrance.

Top Shelf Theology

Wesley-Knox United Church is hosting an online zoom group Tuesdays in July at 7 PM as a way of keeping people connected wherever their summer finds them. It’s called Top Shelf Theology, and we are inviting folks to join us with a libation of their choice and we will have a casual (but directed) discussion about topics of faith and life.

 Psalm for the Week:

Psalm 119: verses 57-60, 64 from the New Revised Standard Edition, updated version

The Lord is my portion;

    I promise to keep your words.

I implore your favour with all my heart;

    be gracious to me according to your promise.

When I think of your ways,

    I turn my feet to your decrees;

   I hurry and do not delay

    to keep your commandments.

The earth, O Lord, is full of your steadfast love;

    teach me your statutes.

Prayer for the Week:

Gracious God,

your faithful love embraces all of creation.  Enable our

thanks and praise to overflow, so that every living thing

may be in awe and wonder of your glory and flourish

as you have intended.   All praise and glory be to you.

Now and forever.  Amen.
