Calvary Compass – May 21, 2024 - Calvary United Church, www.calvaryuc.ca

Dear Friends of Calvary,

This Sunday is Trinity Sunday, the first Sunday after Pentecost. Bill Butt will be conducting the worship service and will be utilizing the liturgy that Ruthanne McLagan wrote for this Sunday. We will keep her memory in our hearts and thoughts. Coffee time will follow the service in the Lower Hall.

Rev. Kerry and Calvary's representatives for the Antler River Watershed Region ( Nancy Hind, Mary Margaret Farrow and Marg LaRocque) will be involved in the Tri-Regional Conference in Port Elgin over the weekend from Thursday May 23rd - Sunday May 26th.

Rev. Kerry will be away from the office starting on Thursday May 23rd - May 29th. After the Tri-Regional Conference, he is taking a few days off and will be back in the office on May 30th. Emergency Pastoral Care will be provided. Please leave a message and someone will reach out to you.

All articles, photos, inspirations, poems, updates, letters to the editor, announcements, book reviews, etc. welcome.

May Is PAR Month!

Don’t be PAR-alyzed. Now is a good time to PAR-ticipate in PAR!

PAR stands for Pre-Authorized Remittance and your church offerings are automatically taken from your bank account on the 20th of every month. It is very convenient and provides a reliable income for Calvary. Currently we have 52 donors on PAR.

If you are interested, contact Kim in the office.

Keep calm and PAR-ty on!

BAPTISM OR JOINING THE CHURCH

Thinking about being baptized or has someone in your family has asked you about baptism? Perhaps you have been thinking about becoming a member at Calvary or transferring your United Church membership to Calvary from another congregation.

Rev. Kerry will be glad to talk to you about either of those topics. He has scheduled June 16th (Father's Day) for baptism(s) and welcoming new members to Calvary.

Please contact the office at 519-434-5526 or Rev. Kerry if you are interested and he will be in touch with more information.

LONDON COMMUNITY CHAPLAINCY

The Outreach Committee will collect non-perishables for the  London Community Chaplaincy throughout the entire year with the exception of July and August. These items are shared between both locations - Southdale and Limberlost, but dropped off to the Southdale location periodically, as they have the larger storage area. Occasionally we provide update/suggestions regarding items currently needed. Breakfast items, such as boxed cereal, oatmeal, peanut bitter, juice boxes and nut free school snacks ( eg. granola bars and fruit cups) are some of the highest needed items. They are also asking for sunscreen and bug spray for the coming summer and camping session for the youth.

Thank you for your generosity!

ONTARIO HEALTH COALITION

In May 2023, the Ontario Health Coalition held a citizen led referendum on keeping health care public. At volunteer-led polling stations across the  province ( at malls, restaurants, bars, pharmacies, etc. ) at least 350,000 people voted NO privatization. One voice generally represents the opinion of 10 others. Unfortunately, the fight is far from over. On Thursday May 10, a march from Nathan Phillip's Square to the Ontario Legislature at Queen's Park will take place to protest the ongoing privatization of public health care.

If you would like to volunteer, donate or get on the bus from London to Toronto, call Jeff, a member of the London Health Care Coalition at 519-476-6623.

For more information go to http://www.StopForProfitHealthcare.ca

Note, people may think their opinion doesn't make a difference, however when Ontarians realized Doug Ford was going to build houses on the Greenbelt, he backed off due to the incredible backlash of people speaking out against this move. Continuous pressure on politicians can make a difference.

CALVARY on the GREEN

Calvary is on the green this year!  The Gathering on the Green is located at the Wortley green space (behind the former Normal School). Gathering on the Green, an OSCO event, takes place from 10 – 4pm, on June 1st, in all weather conditions.

Calvary volunteers are needed to help with set up, staffing our tent and then take down at approx. 4pm. If you are interested or could lend a hand in any aspect of making the day a great success, please contact the office or Rev. Kerry.  It is a day of fun, getting to know our neighbours, and promoting what we do and believe as members and adherents of Calvary.  See attached poster for details.

Scripture Reading for Sunday - Ezra 3: 6 - 13;

Psalm for the Week:

Psalm 104: 31 -33 ( from the New Revised Standard Version Updated translation)

            May the glory of the Lord endure forever;

                may the Lord rejoice in his works -

            who looks on the earth and it trembles,

                who touches the mountains and they smoke.

            I will sing to the Lord  as long as I live;

                I will sing praise to my God while I have being.

 Prayer for the Week:

            Triune God,

            you are one for all and all for one.

            You are always so patient and generous with us

            as we find our place in the world.

            Help us to trust and open our arms as wide as you

            open yours to all. Amen.
