Calvary Compass – October 8, 2024 - Calvary United Church, www.calvaryuc.ca

Dear Friends of Calvary,

Next weekend is Thanksgiving and time for getting together with family and friends. Hopefully for those going away will be able to see wonderful colours on the trees. We seem to be having a later autumn and the leaves are late in turning colours.

The next Compass edition will be on Wednesday, October 16th since Tuesday will be considered a stat holiday for Kim. Therefore the Church Office will be closed on Tuesday.

The Membership and Pastoral Care Committee want to thank everyone who stayed to enjoy a light lunch on Sunday. After expenses, $55 will be donated to the London Community Chaplaincy's Walk-A-thon.

Singspiration is celebrating their Almost 50th Reunion the weekend of October 19th -20th. We will be able to enjoy their music at the Worship Service on Sunday, October 20th.

Worship Services are all live-streamed:

October 13th - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pltZSMrzx5M

October 20th - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLFhuX8_rCQ

Update from the Stewardship and Finance Committee

As Calvary's current financial situation is unfavourable, the Stewardship and Finance Committee wants to keep the congregation informed of our current situation.

Calvary United Church Operating Fund as of September 30, 2024:

Current Operating Revenue          $ 150,794

Current Operating Expenses         $ 196,414

Current Year Operating Deficit      $  (45,620)

There has been an ad-hoc fundraising committee formed to strategize ideas to help reduce this deficit.

 CALVARY GREEN

HONOURABLE HARVEST, is an ancient and relevant practice applied to every exchange between people and the earth. It is not written down but beautifully phrased by Potawatomi professor, Robin Wall Kimmerer, from her book BRAIDING SWEETGRASS - Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teaching of Plants. Our Calvary Book Club read and enjoyed her inspirational stories several years ago and it is well worth repeating.

•           KNOW the ways of the ones who take care of you, so that you may take care of them.

•           INTRODUCE yourself. Be accountable as the one who comes asking for life.

•           ASK permission before taking. Abide by the answer.

•           NEVER take the first. Never take the last.

•           TAKE only what you need.

•           TAKE only that which is given.

•           NEVER take more than half. Leave some for others.

•           HARVEST in a way that minimizes harm.

•           USE it respectfully. Never waste what you have taken. Share.

•           GIVE thanks for what you have been given.

•           GIVE a gift in reciprocity for what you have taken.

•           SUSTAIN the ones who sustain you and the earth will last forever.

Robin Wall Kimmerer will be speaking at Centennial Hall on Thursday, October 17th at 7 pm. Tickets are $10 through Eventbrite

CALVARY'S BAZAAR

Our Fall Bazaar is just around the corner. The sale is Saturday, November 2nd from 9am - 12 noon. Set up is November 1st. starting at 9am.

Donations of jewelry, scarves and hats can be dropped off in the marked boxes at the back door of the church. Books, puzzles and games can be left or put on the stage downstairs.  If you have been making crafts please let Pam Harrison know, so we can be sure to have enough table space. Gently Used items can be dropped off the final week of October.

All baked goods are appreciated. They can be delivered to the church on the morning of November 1st (to be packaged and priced). Items that tend to sell well are cookies, squares, small loaves, fudge, muffins, tarts, cup cakes (rather than full pies and cakes) plus gluten free baking. Liz Macdonald and Brenda Radforth will be looking after the baked goods.

If you have made preserves, please let Mary Kannakko know. If you are looking for some jars to put your preserves in, there are some at the parking lot door in a box or in the storage room next to the Scout/Guide den. All kinds of preserves are welcomed.

If you haven't been asked yet to volunteer, please let Kris Goodman know and she will find you a job. Thanks to everyone that is helping with this year's venture. We really appreciate you!  And don't forget to come and shop!

Wesley-Knox is hosting a Halloween Pizza and Bingo night on October 23rd. See attached poster for details.

Psalm for the Week:

Psalm 126 from the New English Translation Bible

When the Lord restored the well-being of Zion,

            we thought we were dreaming.

At that time we laughed loudly and shouted for joy.

At that time the nations said,

" The Lord has accomplished great things for these people."

The Lord did indeed accomplish great things for us.

            We were happy.

            O Lord, restore our well-being.

Just as the streams in the arid south are replenished.

Those who shed tears as they plant

will shout for joy when they reap the harvest.

The one who weeps as he walks alone, carrying his bag of seed,

will certainly come in with a shout of joy, carrying his sheaves of grain.

 Prayer for the Week:

            Creator God,

to you be glory and praise for ever.

As we rejoice in the gift of your presence among us

let the light of your love always shine in our hearts,

your Spirit ever renew our lives

and your praises ever be on our lips. Amen.

Focus for our daily prayers this week: Peace in the Middle East
