Calvary Compass – November 15, 2022 - Calvary United Church, www.calvaryuc.ca

Dear friends of Calvary,

We had a wonderful first half of November with excellent weather. Now Mother Nature is telling us "Get prepared for winter" with the snow that we received Saturday afternoon to Sunday and more snow/rain predicted for the rest of the week. On Sunday morning, Patrick was clearing the sidewalks so that everyone had a clear walk to get into the church. If you have not met Patrick yet, he is our new custodian. He works from 8:00 am - 12 Noon Monday and Friday and covers Sunday mornings.

It is hard to believe that the first Sunday of Advent is November 27th, marking the beginning of Advent and the Christmas Season. The Christian Development Committee plans to put up the Christmas tree the week of November 21st in time for the first Sunday of Advent. We will be decorating the tree with mittens, hats, scarves and socks to go to the London Community Chaplaincy - Southdale and Limberlost Communities. The residents appreciate the warm items as many of them do not have a lot of money to spare.

Please note that the 4th floor meeting room is still out of service due to floor refinishing. It will be available next week.

Worship Services are all live-streamed:

•           November 20 – https://youtu.be/awSSRZ2J390

•           November 27 - https://youtu.be/gK6GkJ-7RJc

Recorded service for November 13 -  https://youtu.be/iw4SbCjttSM

YARD Clean-up

Thank you to all who came out last Saturday morning to help rake leaves, bag them, trim bushes, put the herb boxes and rain barrels away for the winter. A special thank you goes to Terry Stafford for mulching the front and side yard leaves to make it easier to bag them and spread the mulched leaves onto the gardens. Fortunately, the snow had not arrived yet in the morning and the City had not collected the bags of leaves and garden refuse on Garfield. However they should be taken away sometime this week.

CLOTHING COLLECTION

During the month of November, the Outreach Committee asks that you bring in gently used winter clothing to be donated to Ark Aid and other organizations such as The Good Sam Cupboard at Dundas Centre United Church. Many are struggling to buy groceries and pay their rent and therefore do not have the money to purchase warm clothes for the winter. You can leave your clothing donations at the parking lot entrance/alcove and it will be taken to the stage for sorting.

We are looking for winter clothes for men, women and children including winter coats, boots in good condition (no leaks), warm winter scarves, socks and sweaters. (Please note that we will also continue to have the Mitten Tree for the London Community Chaplaincy with donations of hats, mitts, scarves, and socks in December.)

Thank you in advance for your donations.

CHURCH NURSERY

We are looking for people to cover the church's nursery during worship services. If you are willing to occasionally cover the church nursery, please let Ruthanne McLagan (r.mclagan@hotmail.com) know. We have a well-stocked nursery for little ones to play in while their family is upstairs enjoying the worship service. The Sunday School children are also down in the Meeting Room so you are never alone if you need help.

CHAMPION

This Wednesday, Wayne Harrison will be demonstrating how to make delicious gluten-free treats for Christmas or any occasion. Wayne is noted for his baking skills and delicious treats. If you had come down after last Sunday's Anniversary Service, you would have had an opportunity to taste Wayne's delicious treats and realize that gluten free baked goods are quite delicious. Even if you do not belong to CHAMPION, you are welcome to join us this Wednesday for this presentation. You will even be able to sample a few of his treats with your coffee or tea.

UCW MEETING

Calvary's UCW unit will meet on Thursday, November 17th at 2 pm in the church parlour and by Calvary's Zoom link. All are welcome to join us to reflect on the questions, " What was it like to have Jesus as a brother?"  “What is it like to have Jesus as a brother?"

 Psalm for the Week:

From Psalm 47: 5-8 (from the Living Bible Translation)

God has ascended with a mighty shout, with trumpets blaring.

Sing out your praises to our God, our King.

Yes, sing your highest praises to our King, the King of all the earth.

Sing thoughtful praises!

He reigns above the nations, sitting on his holy throne.

 Prayer for the Week:

God of oneness and wholeness,

You desire for all creation to live in one holy peace.

You call us to be good stewards of all that you have made.

Help us live each day centered in your deep and abiding peace.

Help us to live in love and kindness with all that we meet.

In Jesus’ name we pray.   Amen.
