Calvary Compass – October 11, 2023 - Calvary United Church, www.calvaryuc.ca
Dear Friends of Calvary,
Autumn has arrived and with the colder weather the leaves on the trees are starting to turn to beautiful colours and the farmers are busy harvesting their crops. Hopefully you will be able to get out and enjoy the fall colours while they are brilliant. Next Sunday in the United Church Lectionary and Calendar, it is listed as World Food Sunday. If able, please consider donating to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank and to the collection of non-perishable food for the Southdale Chaplaincy. Unfortunately, there are so many hungry people in the world including our own community.
With sadness we share the news that Doug Hoskin passed away on Sunday, October 8th. As we remember and give thanks to God for our friend Doug Hoskin, let us keep Alicia and Carolyn and the other family members in our prayers and thoughts. Doug’s obituary is posted by AMG Funeral Home:

REGARDING PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST
Our hearts are in anguish over the situation in the Middle East between Hamas and Israel. Rev. Kerry shares this prayer that can be used in your own prayer time.
Our world is in much turmoil and we find ourselves in anguish over the warring faction in Gaza and Israel over the last days.
Help us to remember the example you set for us of what unconditional love looks like and where peace abides. Be with us as peaceful disciples by filling us with love for those close to us, but also those who differ from us. We ask that you help us to love others as you love us, putting other before ourselves. We ask for your comfort and peace for all the innocents caught up in this senseless fighting. Bring peace to the Middle East and to the trouble we may have with our neighbours as well. Thank you for your unfailing love and for peace that abides in your name. We fill up our prayer to you, O Holy One. Amen.

Over the past number of years, Growing Chefs has grown into a thriving enterprise of school and community-based programs that have touched over 35,000 children and youth. They are taught about food sustainability, nutrition and the connection of agricultural systems to the community. They also learn how to prepare meals.

Praise the Lord!
Give thanks to the Lord because he is good,
because his faithful love endures forever.
Who could possibly repeat all of the Lord's mighty acts
or publicly recount all his praise?
The people who uphold justice,
who always do what is right, are truly happy!
Remember me, Lord, with the favor you show your people.
Visit me with your saving help
so I can experience the good things your chosen ones experience,
so I can rejoice in the joy of your nation,
so I can praise along with your possession.
Prayer for the Week:
O God, our help from ages past, we acknowledge that we are your beloved children.
Help us to care for one another and to reflect your amazing love in a world that needs
it more than ever. We rejoice, even when times are difficult, knowing that we share
Your goodness and mercy with everyone we encounter on our journey. Amen.
