Calvary Compass – September 27, 2022 - Calvary United Church, www.calvaryuc.ca

Dear Friends of Calvary,

Week day and evening activities have started and the church is becoming busy with various groups and people. Please remember to wear your orange shirt or something orange on this Friday, September 30th, to celebrate Orange Shirt Day and to support our Indigenous brothers and sisters.

This Sunday, October 2nd, Holy Communion will be celebrated. The element kits will be provided OR you are welcome to bring your own elements if you wish. There will be a benevolent offering taken. This offering supports our Community Breakfasts, provides grocery gift cards to families in need and occasionally helps people to cover their rent so that they are not evicted. Please give generously because this fund got low during covid when we were not worshipping together and we need to build it up again.

Prayer requests are always welcome for family, friends and other circumstances you are praying for and would like the Calvary Prayer Team to pray for as well.  Email, contact the office or use the prayer request card in the pew backs on Sunday.

The office will be closed on Friday, September 30th to observe Truth and Reconciliation day. The office will re-open on Tuesday, October 4th.

Worship Services are all live-streamed:

CALVARY BAZAAR - Saturday November 5th

BAKING TABLE

With the Calvary Bazaar just a month away, we are looking for bakers to begin making treats for the bake table. Cookies squares, muffins, small loaves, etc. all sell well and can be made ahead and frozen.

Please contact either Brenda Radforth OR Liz Macdonald if you are able to help.

PRESERVE TABLE

If you have made or going to make any preserves, please contact Mary Kannakko 519-672-8286 (mkannakko@rogers.com). She would also like a list of your ingredients so that they can be put on the recipe cards that will be displayed on the table. Shoppers do ask what is the ingredients.

CRAFTS

If you are willing and able to join us to help complete crafts for the bazaar, please join us Thursday, September 29th from 9:30 am - 12 Noon in the Church Parlour. (The 4th floor is out of bounds for everyone due to the repairs, sanding and finishing of the floor.)

LONDON COMMUNITY CHAPLAINCY

The Outreach Committee would like to thank the congregation for their ongoing support of the London Community Chaplaincy food pantry collection. In connecting with them recently, they are requesting the following items:

-small bags of rice

-pasta sauce (regular and Alfredo)

-canned vegetables (peas, carrots, corn)

-canned soups ( cream of chicken or mushroom) and "chunky" soup

-crackers and school snacks

-pancake mix and syrup

-peanut butter and jam

-canned tuna

-Tuna Helper

-Kraft dinner

Please bring items to the church and leave them in the bins in the hallway to the sanctuary. We will collect until November 6th. Thank you!

Looking for Ushers

As increasing numbers of Calvary members return to in-person worship this fall, we will need ushers. Some of our former ushers have retired and if you‘re not or never have been an usher please consider volunteering. You need to arrive 30 minutes before worship, and serve no more than once a month, or less. It’s an opportunity to meet, greet, and talk to people you know or people you didn’t know, and get caught up on what has been happening over the summer—or maybe over the entire covid time. If you think you might be interested, please contact Kim in the church office.

Calvary Parking lot

The Girl Guides will be using Calvary’s parking lot on Wednesday, September 28 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm for bike safety instruction. Therefore the parking lot will not be available during this time.

4th Floor Meeting room

The flooring in the 4th Floor meeting room (where the pool table is) is currently being refinished and therefore not available for meetings or even passing through. Therefore Billiard Buddies is cancelled and CHAMPION will be using the chapel instead. This could take a few weeks and we will let you know when it is available again.

BOO-Hoo, Boo - YOU are needed to assist Rev. Kerry with a few games for the Hallowe’en in the Village (HitV) event on Saturday, October 29th from 1-5p.m. All activities will be on the Y headquarters property. If interested, contact Rev. Kerry at the office, 519-434-5526.

Scripture Readings - Lamentations 3: 19-26: Luke 17: 5-10

Psalm for the Week:

For God alone my soul waits in silence,

for my hope is from him.

He alone is my rock and my salvation,

my fortress; I shall not be shaken.

On God rests my deliverance and my honour;

my mighty rock, my refuge is in God.

Prayer for the Week:

Loving and creating God;

you draw near to us in the simple things:

word, water, bread and wine.

Blessed by your gracious and glorious gifts,

may we long for nothing more than to give thanks

for our blessings and to serve others in

Your name.    Amen.
