Calvary Compass – October 4, 2022 - Calvary United Church, www.calvaryuc.ca

Dear Friends of Calvary,

This coming weekend is Thanksgiving. Many of you will be closing up your cottages and at home, starting to put away your lawn furniture and preparing your gardens and homes for winter. The cold weather is coming as our first night of frost was this past Sunday night. Hopefully this Thanksgiving Weekend, you will be able to get together with friends and family to give thanks for the many blessings that have happened in your lives this past year.

The 4th floor remains out-of-bounds until at least October 8th. Huron Flooring is doing an excellent job repairing, sanding and re-finishing the main floor. Further work will be done on the other rooms located on the 4th floor and also Denise's office. Thank you to Nancy Hind for being at the church every day while the fellows work on the flooring.

Worship Services are all live-streamed:

October 9 – Thanksgiving - https://youtu.be/8IxVtbEXaTo

October 16 – https://youtu.be/AE5rOOvyTz0

Recorded service for October 2 -  https://youtu.be/wX3O5yEcKXE

On Sunday, October 16th, the Worship service will feature Denise Pelley, guest speaker and vocalist, accompanied by Nevin Campbell, piano. More information to follow.

CALVARY GREEN

HONOURABLE HARVEST is an ancient and relevant practice that applies to every exchange between people and the earth. It is not written down but beautifully phrased by Professor Robin Wall Kimmerer of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation from her book BRAIDING SWEETGRASS with Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teaching of Plants. Our Calvary Book Club read and enjoyed her inspirational stories last February.

•           KNOW the ways of the ones who take care of you, so that you may take care of them.

•           INTRODUCE yourself. Be accountable as the one who comes asking for life.

•           ASK permission before taking. Abide by that answer.

•           NEVER take the first. Never take the last.

•           TAKE only what you need.

•           TAKE only that which is given.

•           NEVER take more than half. Leave some for others.

•           HARVEST in a way that minimizes harm.

•           USE it respectfully. Never waste what you have taken. Share.

•           GIVE thanks for what  you have been given.

•           GIVE a gift, in reciprocity for what you have taken.

•           SUSTAIN the ones who sustain you and the earth will last forever.
