November 30, 2021: A Green Christmas

CALVARY GREEN - I'm dreaming of a green Christmas ... Well a Calvary green one, anyway...

Sights, sounds and aromas of the holiday are in the air. It is certainly a magical time of the year. Unfortunately, it is also an extremely wasteful time of the year.

Several suggestions to encourage a more eco friendly season:

  • try to buy less, less consumption, less garbage we produce.

  • a single gift exchange or a fun family or friend idea -the dreaded REGIFT (repurpose, right?)

  • homemade/bazaar gifts are truly enjoyed - jams, goodies, handmade items

  • a thoughtful gift idea- a special visit, a dinner invitation (we all know these are difficult times for some visits), shoveling snow or baby sitting are always appreciated.

  • choose quality over quantity

  • try to avoid over-packaging products.

  • tickets to a live presentation when possible

  • reusable water bottles, travel mugs, a rechargeable battery, cloth bags, permanent coffee filters, a hot water bottle or a cozy blanket when heat is turned down.

  • when wrapping gifts get creative, use cloth bags (they can last years), reuse paper gift bags/boxes, decorate shoe boxes, etc., wrap gift with another gift such as a tea towel or blanket to name a few.

  • use LED lights for decorations, use timers and don't leave on for 24 hours a day

  • potted trees are popular and can be planted outdoors later.

  • try not to use disposable dishes and cutlery (borrow or rent when necessary)

DID YOU KNOW  - the 4 Used Battery Collection Boxes are located at the Ridout St. doors, the hallway annex, the lower level ramp door entrance and the back parking door foyer.
