October 5th, 2021: A Few Fall Reminders
CALVARY GREEN - Autumn has given us some encouraging environmental news. The Federal election brought much needed attention to "Reducing Green House Emissions".
A local branch of '"Green Sacred Spaces" (supported by the United Church) has just started in London. Calvary Green is onboard.
DID YOU KNOW .... Another positive note...
Recycling bins in Huron, Perth, Lambton and Middlesex counties end up at Bluewater Recycling Association's sorting facility in Huron Park. These plastics (high density polyethylene, HDPE) are sorted by both robot and hand baled and sent to Listowel (EFS Plastics) where it is shredded, cleaned and pelletized into plastic resins. Next, it is returned to Huron Park where several companies turn these pellets into traffic cones and farm drainage pipes. This amazing "partnership" has saved over a million pounds of plastic and stays within one hour drive of where it was collected.
A few Fall reminders
Home insulation is important (the R value depends on where you live) and the level of insulation to install also depends on the area in your home. Weatherizing your home helps to prevent leaks via cracks between the wall and vent, windows and door frames. Caulking and weather stripping are most common fixes.
Clean and check furnace... replacing furnace filters regularly.
Turn down thermostat a few degrees in winter.
Install programmable or smart thermostat if possible.
Check chimney and clean when necessary.
Clean coils behind refrigerator, dryer vents, etc.
Consider energy efficient appliances when replacing.
Have tires checked. Cooler weather can lower tire pressure and cause less fuel efficiency.
Mulch those leaves... plant bulbs ...plant trees.
Check summer clothes for those to repurpose or donate.
