Calvary Compass – August 16, 2022 - Calvary United Church, www.calvaryuc.ca

Dear Friends of Calvary,

It is hard to believe that it is already the middle of August. Even though there have been no official meetings, the work of the church continues and several projects have been discussed and planned for the Fall.

Our gardens are looking lovely and hopefully, our neighbours are taking slips of the herbs in the two herb planters for their enjoyment. There are scissors in the herb planters if you want to take a snip of herbs after church for your Sunday lunch or dinner.

Did you know that throughout the pandemic and currently Calvary has continued serving a bagged breakfast for those coming to Community Breakfasts when other churches had stopped? Thank you to everyone who has helped with these breakfasts and continues to help every third Saturday of the month.

Rev. Kerry is on vacation from August 13th to September 3rd. He will return to lead the worship service on September 4th. While he is away, Rev. Wendy Noble will be available for Emergency Pastoral Care. If you are in need of Emergency Pastoral Care, please leave a message on the church's answering machine and Kim will contact her for you.

Bill Butt will be conducting the worship services for August 21st and 28th. Thank you to Ruthanne McLagan for conducting worship service last Sunday.

The next editions of the Calvary Compass will go out on:

    * Tuesday, August 30th

    * Wednesday, September 7th

We will be restarting  weekly editions in September. Please send your notices to Mary Kannakko (mkannakko@rogers.com) and she will put them in the next edition of the Calvary Compass.

Calvary Catalyst

If you have photos, stories, or articles for the Fall edition of the Catalyst, please email them to Bruce Jones (scouterbruce@rogers.com)  for the Fall edition . Please make sure that you have permission to issue any photos. The due date for submissions to the Catalyst is Friday, September 2nd.

CHAMPION is starting up again on Wednesday, September 7th. Along with the regular activities, we will be including a knitting and crocheting corner, to make warm items for those in need, a monthly speaker and new programs to try out. The time is 1:00 - 3:30 pm and we welcome you to participate, to suggest ideas and bring a friend or two.

FALL BAZAAR

The plan is to hopefully hold our bazaar in person in early November. If you are a sewer, a knitter, a crafter, a wood crafter, preserve maker or baker, the organizers would appreciate items to sell at the bazaar.. Hopefully there will also be a place to pick up a used book or two and maybe some other items.

CALVARY GREEN

SINGLE USE PLASTIC

BAN UPDATE

It is estimated that almost 10,000 tonnes of plastic debris enter the Great Lakes every year, harming our animal and plant life. Ontario's Blue Box Recycling Program recovers only 28% of all plastic packaging in our province. Canada-wide 3 million tonnes of plastic waste are thrown away and only 9% recycled.

Ottawa has moved to ban many single use plastics by the end of 2023.

The 6 single use items are:

        *checkout bags

        *cutlery

        *food service ware

        *ring carriers

        *stir sticks

*straws  (exemption for flexible straws in heathcare settings)

The single use plastic ban in Ontario came into effect on January 1, 2022 -  a slow process with lots of work yet to be done.

REMEMBER .. bring your own reusable cloth produce bags when shopping, including grocery and ALL retail stores.

Try to REDUCE the amount of plastic purchased. RETURN all plastic bags to Metro bins or simply bring to Church.

Try taking another 7 Day PLASTIC Free Challenge. Are our shopping habits improving???

Garden Dedication

JOIN US on Sunday, September 25th for Rev. Kerry's Garden Dedication and Blessing. Weather permitting, we plan on ending our worship service outside in the garden.

 Psalm for the Week:

Psalm 138: 4, 8

All the kings of the earth shall praise you. O God,

for they have heard the words of your mouth.

God fulfills promises made for me.

Your steadfast love, O God, endures forever.

Do not forsake the work of your hands.

 Prayer for the Week:

Most high and holy God,

you are near and you are far.

You are distant and every-present. You are faith as the sunrise and tender

as grass. Your outstretched hand is less

than a prayer away. Help us now. Help us always. Amen.
