Calvary Compass – July 19, 2022 - Calvary United Church, www.calvaryuc.ca

Dear Friends of Calvary,

The Church Council met on July 3rd to come up with a tentative plan to deal with anyone who disrupts a worship service. The Ridout Street doors will be initially open until the prelude begins. At that time, the ushers will close the doors, but leave them unlocked for those who come late. A sign will be on the outside pillars informing people that they are welcome to come in for the worship service and to knock if they are unable to open the doors because of the doors sticking. As before, the other church doors will be locked around 10:35 am by the custodian. In the future, we are looking into providing information sessions for the congregation on handling situations that occur with a person who is having a mental health issue. Hopefully with better knowledge, a few members of the congregation will be willing to identify themselves as defusers in case a situation arises again. The ushers will not be asked to intervene in a situation.

The next editions of the Calvary Compass will go out on:

    * Wednesday, August 3rd

    * Tuesday, August 16th

    * Tuesday, August 30th

    * Wednesday, September 7th

Please send your notices to Mary Kannakko ( mkannakko@rogers.com) and she will put them in the next edition of the Calvary Compass.

CALVARY GREEN

Gas prices have climbed steadily in the past few months (with a small drop in the last week or so) and we can expect still higher prices in the future.

Driving less is an obvious help but not always practical for many of us.

A few tips from the expert that could save us up to 20% in fuel next year:

    *ACCELERATE SMOOTHLY. Stomping on the accelerator can increase fuel consumption by 39%.

    *AVOID AGGRESSIVE BREAKING - take your foot off of the gas and glide to a stop.

    *CHECK PRESSURE - under inflated tires increases fuel consumption by 4%

    *KEEP CAR STREAMLINED - remove roof and bike racks when not in use.

    *FOLLOW MANUFACTURER'S PLAN - keep engine tuned, oil clean and the front end aligned to optimize gas savings.

Our new herb planters on Ridout and Garfield are filled and ready for you to help yourself anytime. Scissors are in place in each box.

Coming soon - special recipes (ie. oils, etc.) on our web page.

THANK YOU to our garden watering/weeding team for their support. Help is still needed in September.

Psalm for the Week:

Psalm 82: 3-4, 8

                Give justice to the weak and the orphan;

                    maintain the right of then lowly and the destitute.

                Rescue the weak and the needy;

                    deliver them from the hand of the wicked.

                Rise up, O God, judge the earth;

                    for all the nations belong to you.

Prayer for the Week:

God of grace and mercy,

you gave us the ability to lift a hand to help or harm,

to utter a word that can raise up or to tear down,

with your gift of peace and love.

Grant us the strength to choose our

words and actions well.  Amen.
