Calvary Compass – July 31, 2024 - Calvary United Church, www.calvaryuc.ca

Dear Friends of Calvary,

It is hard to believe that today is the last day of July and the summer is half over. Hopefully you have been able to enjoy some nice weather and have not been too hot on the very warm days

The next edition of the Compass will be Tuesday, August 20th.  The weekly editions will re-start Wednesday, September 4th.

Kim Knowles will be off the week of August 12th to 19th. Nancy Hind will check for messages and collect the mail when Kim is away. Thank you Nancy!

Rev. Kerry will be on vacation from Monday, August 19 to Wednesday, September 4th.

Starting on Monday August 19th, workmen will be performing an upgrade on Calvary's lift (elevator). Consequently, no one will be able to use the lift for two weeks. For the Sunday, August 25th Worship Service, the lift will not be operational and as a result people who cannot climb stairs will not have access to the Sanctuary. However, it is hoped to be working for the Sunday, September 1st Worship Service. CHAMPION is aware and an alternate plan is proposed for their August 21st meeting.

+ + + + + + + + + + +

Unfortunately, there is sad news to share with the Calvary community. Long-time member Carole Howey passed away on July 14, 2024 at the age of 90.

During this time of sorrow, our thoughts and prayers are with her family and loved ones.

“Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted.” Matthew 5:4

CHAMPION

For the month of August, the group will meet August 7th and 21st.

CHAMPION is open to anyone aged 55 and over. The meetings are every Wednesday afternoon from 1:00 - 3:30 pm in the church parlour. Once a month, a guest speaker presents a variety of topics of interest to everyone. Members play cards, games, help with the making of bedrolls for the homeless and socialize with each other. Some play pickleball in the lower hall before the regular meeting. At present, the Committee is discussing possible other activities for the coming year. Further information will be in future editions of the Compass. New members are always welcome!

Psalm of the Week:

Psalm 111: 2 -5 the New International Version Translation

            Great are the works of the Lord;

                they are pondered by all who delight in them.

            Glorious and majestic are his deeds,

                and his righteousness endures forever.

            He has caused his wonders to be remembered;

                the Lord is gracious and compassionate.

            He provides food for those who fear him;

                he remembers his covenant forever.

 Prayer of the Week:

            God of love and compassion;

            great are your marvelous works. We give thanks for the ways you

            have been gracious and merciful with us. We offer you our praise

            for the wonders of creation and for all the goodness we experience

            in our lives. Thanks be to you, now and forever. Amen.
