Calvary Compass – September 7 - Calvary United Church, www.calvaryuc.ca

Dear Friends of Calvary,

It is hard to believe that July and August are over and the Fall activities are starting up again. In future editions of the Compass various activities, meetings and opportunities to get-together will be announced. Hopefully you can join us.

If you have pastoral concerns, please do not hesitate to leave a message with Kim Knowles in the office so that she can pass them onto Rev. Kerry and the Prayer Team.

Remember that the Church library is always open after Worship Services on Sundays. Darlene Sanderson can help you find interesting material to read or listen to.

On Sunday afternoon, there was tragic news that came out of Saskatchewan. Let us keep members of the James Smith Cree Nation and Weldon, SK. in our prayers and thoughts. May we also pray for wisdom in this time of tragedy and for the care and comfort for all we endeavour to walk respectfully with one another and Creation. Peace be with you.

Worship Services are all live-streamed:

•           September 11 -  https://youtu.be/XyoUubxCVsE

•           September 18 - https://youtu.be/Sz6Ia2bNdeU

Recorded service for September 4 - https://youtu.be/haUAAewdDnE

FUNDSCRIPT

The next ordering date is Sunday, September 11th. These gift cards are for a variety of different stores and types of merchandise. They also provide different percentages of money back to Calvary. If you wish more details, please contact Nancy Hind (nancyhind@rogers.com)

GATHERING SUNDAY

This coming Sunday, September 11th, is Gathering Sunday. Our Sunday School will be starting again and the Senior Choir will be back in the choir loft. Rev. Kerry plans to bless everyone's backpack and carrying devices that anyone, young and older, brings to church. This includes those that are going back to school - elementary, high school, university, college, night classes or another learning venture.

We have not planned any coffee or lunch after the worship service.

CALVARY GREEN

The March 20th Worship Service included a session on Calvary's efforts to "green" the environment. It focused on our pollinator garden initiative. We handed out lettuce and wildflower seed packets.

We hope you enjoyed the experience of planting these seeds. We are now asking you to send pictures of the results of the wildflower planting in your garden. If you took lettuce packages and consumed the produce, please forward any thoughts/reactions to planting these seeds and your success.

We wish to incorporate pictures and/or comments in either an upcoming service or on our Calvary Green section of the website.

Please forward  your photos or comments/reactions to Kim at calvunitedchurch@execulink.com by September 14th.

Garden Dedication

JOIN US on Sunday, September 25th for Rev. Kerry's Garden Dedication and Blessing. Weather permitting, we plan on ending our worship service outside in the garden.

CHAMPION is starting up again this Wednesday, September 7th. Along with all of the regular activities, we will be including a knitting and crocheting corner, to make warm items for those in need, a monthly speaker and new programs to try out. The time is 1:00 - 3:30 pm and we welcome you to participate, to suggest ideas and bring a friend or two. We now have brochures if you want to pass them on to friends that are interested in our group.

SENIOR CHOIR

Senior Choir starts Thursday, September 8th.

Choir practice takes place Thursday nights from 7:30 to 9 pm in the sanctuary.

If you like to sing, think about joining us. We are always looking for new members!

Bible Study:

 Psalm for the Week:

Psalm 139, vs 1-4  translation is from " The Voice"

Note: The Voice is a dynamic equivalent English translation of the Bible developed by Thomas Nelson and the Ecclesia Bible Society

O Eternal One, You have explored my heart and know exactly who I am;

You even know the small details like when I take a seat and when I stand again.

Even when I am far away, You know what I am thinking.

You observe my wanderings and my sleeping, my waking and my dreaming,

and you know everything I do in more detail than even I know.

You know what I am going to say long before I say it.

It is true, Eternal One, that you know everything and everyone.

  Prayer for the Week:

O God, our ever-present support, whenever our faith fails and our courage crumbles,

inspire us to yearn for your most wonderful gifts of word and sacrament

so that we may cherish your presence and find comfort in your love.

In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
