An Affirming Church

At the last Council Meeting, after hearing the presentation by the group researching whether to start the process of Calvary becoming an Affirming Community of Faith, the members of the Council voted to approve starting the process. Affirming Churches are part of the United Church of Canada (Affirming United - AUSE) and strive to provide a safe environment for all people no matter what their age, ability, social/financial status, ethnicity, sexual orientation and gender identity are in the church and in society. In order to achieve this, there is education for all so that the members of the church have knowledge of what it all means and what steps need to be taken in order to become an Affirming Community of Faith. The normal process for most churches takes about 2 years to go through the various steps and to get at least 75% of the members of the congregation to approve becoming an Affirming Community of Faith. Already First St. Andrew's, Riverside and Trinity are Affirming Communities of Faith within London with several others in the process. There are several United Churches across Canada that are part of AUSE. A Steering Committee is being formed to start this process. Kathie Leigh, Ruthanne McLagan, Jill Lucas, Bill Butt and Mary Kannakko have agreed to be part of the Steering Committee. If you are interested in joining the committee or wanting further information, please contact one of the people listed. We plan to take this slowly and provide lots of education to everyone before a vote takes place.
